about

Walker Road is an Americana album by Alison Harris and The Barn Owls recorded live and analog at the historic Walker Road Schoolhouse building in Two Rock, CA. The goal of this recording was to capture the organic warmth and spontaneity of the band playing music in a beautiful old room together. The Walker Road Schoolhouse building, located in Sonoma County (Northern California) features high ceilings, a fire in the hearth, and views of green fields and mustard flowers through old glass windows. The majority of the music, including all lead vocals band instrumentals, and band solos, was captured live on tape with the band playing in a circle. Overdubs included vintage instruments with lots of character- Wurlitzer, Hammond B-3 organ, Pedal Steel, and Vibraphone. Alison Harris and The Barn Owls are Alison Harris (Lead Vocals, Guitar, Keys), Erik Stieg (Mandolin, Electric Guitar), Ben Bolin (Fiddle), Max Ramey (Bass), and Chipley Trombley (Drums, Percussion, Back Up Vocals). Produced by Alison Harris and The Barn Owls. Engineered, Mixed and Mastered by Brad Dollar.

Track Name: Broken Down Ford
Broken Down Ford

An old broken down Ford
On the side of a highway
At the top of a hill

Wondering if you love me like before
You don’t see things my way
I don’t think you will

I’ve got love pouring out of a bottle
One more shot, come on baby, bottoms up
That stuff burns going down, that sweet amnesia
Makes me forget how much I need your love
Tough luck

Wind blowing around
Looking out of a window
Living life on the road

Wondering if you’ll ever touch the ground
You’ve been flying solo
Learning tricks from the crows

I’ve got love pouring out of a bottle
One more shot, come on baby, bottoms up
That stuff burns going down, that sweet amnesia
Makes me forget how much I need your love
Tough luck

Long road, hidden garden
Long drive, Zero 7
New life, never again
Will I see your face my friend

Every now and then I hear some news
You’ve been running hard
Winning every fight

Me, I’m full of smiles but steeped in blues
Sometimes I miss the dark
Now that I live in the light

I’ve got love pouring out of a bottle
One more shot, come on baby, bottoms up
That stuff burns going down, that sweet amnesia
Makes me forget how much I need your love
Tough luck
Track Name: Hootenanny Song
Hootenanny Song

Well I grew up tall, I grew up thin
That old time music under my skin
Now I’m on the road in the back of a van
Don’t have much money, don’t have a plan

Oh well, what the hell
‘Cause I’m making a living anyhow
In dirty dive bars in people’s yards
In the street with a pan
However I can
That Old Time Music got a hold on me

Now I worked a job, I played my part
Those people really broke my heart
They told me that this music ain’t no good

You can keep your job, your 9 to 5
Me I like 1 4 and 5
and I can sing that Old Time Music all night long

Oh well, what the hell
‘Cause I’m making a living anyhow
In dirty dive bars in people’s yards
In the street with a pan
However I can
That Old Time Music got a hold on me

Now I love hoedowns, and back porch jams
And places where people do what they can
To help each other out in times of need

We lift our voices to the wind
And when times get hard, we do it again
We play that Old Time Music all night long

Oh well, what the hell
‘Cause I’m making a living anyhow
In dirty dive bars in people’s yards
In the street with a pan
However I can
That Old Time Music got a hold on me
Track Name: Electrify My Summer
Electrify My Summer

It wasn’t your love that slayed me
But my hand that plunged the knife
It wasn’t your heart that betrayed me
But my obsession with wrong and right

But tonight I’m listening to your records
Delicious to remember
The girl with golden hair
In a flood of technicolor memories
Blood and glass
Pink flowers in the air

You electrify my summer

You never took me swimming
In the lethal Chico heat
But still I found black lava
Cold water, sweet relief

In the black rock tunnels under water
I found myself a lover
Who called himself escape
And he kissed me so hard my lips bruised
The very perfect opposite of you

You electrify my summer

Darlin’ wasn’t it confusing
Our little trapezoid of lust
Some loving, others using
Turning healthy hearts to dust

But tonight I’m listening to your records
Delicious to remember
The girl with golden hair
Once a muse, now a sort of ghost
Investigating blood, and skin, and bones

You electrify my summer
Track Name: Lonesome
Lonesome

Well the night feels so lonesome without you
And it’s a shame how I’m crying about you
And the loneliest time
Is about a quarter after nine
When the night’s rolling in without you

Well it’s a shame how I’m falling so quickly
Just like the rain that falls down in a heartbeat
I’ve been saving myself
But I jumped right off the shelf
And I’m hoping you’ll be here to catch me

But what if that’s not the way it goes
You could walk away and leave me stranded
Love’s a briar
Love’s a thorny rose
But my heart’s not dead yet
I still know how to forget

Well I’m hoping that you’ve got the touch
To make me talk, make me laugh, make me moan
I’ve been saving myself
But I jumped right off the shelf
Love’s a noose and a crown
Lifts you up
Drags you down
But I can’t fall in love without you
Track Name: Little Whiskey
Little Whiskey

Want to drink a little whiskey
Pour a little wine
Build a little church for this heart of mine
Fill it full of music
Sing a loud song
Baby when you come you can sing along

Want to roll down the window
Listen to the rain
Drink the whole bottle
Feel no pain
Pop a couple pills
Yell a couple yells
Baby when you come put you under my spell

See the train coming down the track
Clickety-clack, clickety-clack
When the train rolls by makes me want to fly
Meet me at the Saturday Night Fish Fry

Want to kill a little time
Drink a little wine
Coffee in the morning make me feel just fine
Go back to bed
Go back to sleep
Dreaming of you makes my knees grow weak
Track Name: Storm's Coming In
Storm’s Coming In

The storm’s coming in, babe
The storm’s coming in
Hear that blowing wind
The storm’s coming in

Don’t be afraid, babe
Don’t be afraid
We’ll dance in the rain
When the storm comes in

It comes and it goes
It comes and it goes
The wind and the wailing
It comes and it goes

When it storms and it thunders
Don’t get lost
Come on outside, babe
And lie in the grass

Come on outside
And take my sweet hand
And we’ll dance in the rain
When the storm comes in
Track Name: A Little Love
A Little Love

I don’t have a whole lot of time to breathe
A whole lot of time to be
Since I found you

I don’t have a whole lot of time to cry
There’s no reason why
Since I found you

Tell me why can’t we just get by
With a little love
With a little touch
Tell me why can’t we just touch each other
With a little love we can have enough

I can see rain clouds coming down
I don’t really mess around
Since I found you

Come touch my skin
I’m outside looking in
I don’t really know just where I’ve been
Since I found you

Tell me why can’t we just get by
With a little love
With a little touch
Tell me why can’t we just touch each other
With a little love we can have enough

I can’t say I haven’t been a little let down
I’m trying hard to find my sound
Since I found you

I like being lost where the ocean meets the open field
I learned how to beg, borrow and steal
Since I found you

Tell me why can’t we just get by
With a little love
With a little touch
Tell me why can’t we just touch each other
With a little love we can have enough
Track Name: Divisadero
Divisadero

When you walk Divisadero
When you walk down Page and Haight
Think of this wild and lonesome valley
Remember how it feels to wait

When we went walking through the dark
And the dirty night glowed bright around you
When we went walking through the rain
I hoped my heart had gone and found you

I’ll never go to New Orleans now
I’ll never hear that trumpet call
I’ll have to watch you dance alone now
To get the flavor of that place

‘Cause it was lost inside our folly
Our stupid human oversight
Some say it’s Sodom and Gomorrah
Or maybe corporate greed and vice

Sometimes we’re lost in Georgia downpours
Sometimes we run
Sometimes we lose
Sometimes we stand on moonlit rooftops
And look across that Golden Gate

When you walk Divisadero
When you walk down Page and Haight
Think of this wild and lonesome valley
Remember how it feels to wait
Track Name: Trace Your Soul
Trace Your Soul

In order to tell the truth of you
I had to use these minor chords
You say that you don’t
But Doll, you do
Play with my heart around the sore

In our twisted fate
Why do love and hate
Come so close to bear
When I trace your soul in the dark
I can trace your soul in the dark

Do you hate me because I have your time
Now I’m caught between yours and mine
I can’t tell the difference between the two
I feel like you’re me and I am you

When I’ve had enough
It’s a sweeter pain
Our breath came close
When I trace your soul in the dark
I can trace your soul in the dark

You’ve got to get out of my head
There’s someone I’ve got to choose instead
It’s hard when you’re pounding through my heart
When I trace your soul in the dark
I can trace your soul in the dark
Track Name: Broken Again
Broken Again

Headed for the big lights
We’re going to have a big time
Three girls and a boy
He’s going to play you like a toy

Talking to the man
Holding his hand
Moonlight gaze
You don’t even know
The game he plays

Looking for love in the right place
Looking for love and now you’re falling from grace
Looking for love, trying to win
Now you’ve gone and got your heart broken again

You were a messed up fool
You were a concubine
Little baby lost her cool
When it comes to love
There ain’t no reason or rhyme

Dancing to the funky METERS
Becoming a believer
The lust and the sin
Oh the tonic and the gin

16 days, 16 nights
Girl, you didn’t even put up a fight
Your heart’s on the rails
You’re about to become a broken fairy tale

Looking for love in the right place
Looking for love and now you’re falling from grace
Looking for love, trying to win
Now you’ve gone and got your heart broken again
Track Name: My Kind
My Kind

You’re like a freight train
Running through my brain
Whiskey and Cocaine
Habits hard to shake

I kind of like them
A little off the balance line
If you’re a hard one
Hard to know and hard to find
Then you’re my kind

Just like a freight train
An earthquake, a hurricane
Natural Disaster
Did you mean to leave all this pain
In your wake

Or are you helpless
Driven by the winds of fate
If you need someone to hold onto
Someone to love you blind
Then you’re my kind

I feel like laughing
I feel like breaking down
I feel like dancing with the devil
And crying out a lonesome sound

Just like a freight train
Driving through the wind and rain
Whiskey and cocaine
A blues horn line
Red red wine

I’d drive a thousand miles
To wind up at your door
You can show me all your cracks and scars
I’ll still love you more
I’m your lifeline
‘Cause you’re my kind
